Winemaker Peta Kotz, founder of Sabi Wabi Wine, required an identity for her business that reflected her personal approach to winemaking. Inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, which embraces beauty in natural imperfection, Peta creates natural wines with traditional techniques and an experimental spirit.

To reflect the lo-fi winemaking spirit in the logo, a hand cut ‘Sabi Wabi’ was carved into lino, creating an original print which was evolved digitally into the final design.

Designing the labels for Sabi Wabi Wine’s first release, ‘Bright Eyes’ - a limited edition of 50 bottles of Chardonnay/Semillon - expressed the bright colour and taste of the wine, and the exciting experimental ethos in its making. This batch quickly sold out.

For subsequent releases, a colourful suite of digital abstract patterns were created as a visual representation of the wine’s journey, from conception to the drinking and sharing experience.

Prior to Peta establishing Sabi Wabi Wine, a commission of original artworks as wine labels were created for a special release of 5 bottles of wine. These were artworks on paper from a series titled Small Worlds, carefully hand applied onto the glass with details of the wine typed off a vintage typewriter.
